The magnolia for a screen as well as a show. Dense and upright, with glossy dark-green leaves backed in rust-brown suede, and big creamy-white fragrant flowers from a young age — spring right through to autumn.
Why you'll love it
- Long flowering season — spring through summer and often into autumn.
- Flowers young — no waiting years for the first display.
- Dense and upright — it screens rather than sprawls.
- Evergreen — cover all year round.
- Fragrant — big lemon-scented flowers.
Best for
- Evergreen screening at 3–5 m
- A feature tree in a front garden
- Formal avenues
- Anywhere you want flowers over a long season
